What is a nuchal cord?

Nuchal cord is the term used by medical professionals when your baby has their umbilical cord wrapped around their neck.An umbilical cord is a lifeline for a baby in the womb. Running from the baby’s abdomen to the placenta, the umbilical cord usually contains three blood vessels and is about 21” long.Which occur during pregnancy, labor, or birth.

The umbilical cord is your baby’s life source. It gives them all the blood, oxygen, and nutrients that they need. Any problem with your baby’s umbilical cord can be very worrying, but the majority of nuchal cords aren’t dangerous in any way.

A nuchal cord is also extremely common, with around 1 in 3 babies being born perfectly healthily with the cord wrapped around their neck.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSE OF NUCHAL CORD ?
Random fetal movement is the primary cause of nuchal cord, other factors that might increase the risk of umbilical cord wrapping around the baby’s neck include an extra long umbilical cord or excess amniotic fluid that allows more of fetal movement, nuchal cord are typically discovered by birth.

Healthy cord are protected by a gelatinous, soft filling called Wharton’s jelly. The jelly is there to keep the cord knot-free so that your baby will be safe no matter how much they wriggle and flip themselves around.

You may also be more likely to get a nuchal cord If:
√ you’re having twins or multiples
√ you have excessive amniotic fluid
√ The core is especially long
√ The structure of the cord is poor.

WHAT ARE THE CLASSES OF NUCHAL CORD?

*First* , based on how many times the cord is wrapped around the fetal neck: single nuchal cord, double nuchal cord, etc.
*Second* , whether it is wrapped loosely or tightly. A “tight” nuchal cord is defined as one that cannot be slipped over the baby’s head during delivery, and may compress the fetal neck.
*Third* , the nuchal cord can be Type A or Type B:

•A Type A nuchal cord is “unlocked.” The umbilical end goes under the placental end, and fetal movement can easily undo it.
•A Type B nuchal cord is “locked.” The placental end of the cord goes under the umbilical end of the cord, potentially leading to another type of umbilical cord complication known as a “true knot.” This will not likely be resolved by fetal movement.
